Gary Catalano was born of Italian and Anglo-Australian parentage in 1947, and died after a long illness in December 2002. He published widely on both art and literature and is the author of 11 books, among them Remembering the Rural Life (1978), The Empire of Grass (1992) which won the Grace Leven Prize, and a Selected Poems published by UQP in 1993. Much of his writing was in the form of prose poems, and his Fresh Linen (UQP, 1988) contained 60 prose poems. Catalano also worked as a literary and art critic, writing several books on Australian art and art criticism including The Solitary Watcher: Rick Amor and his Art (2001).
