Adam Aitken was born in London in 1960, to an Anglo-Australian father and a Thai mother. He spent his childhood in South-east Asia, migrated to Australia and graduated from Sydney University in 1982. He was a co-editor of the stapled poetry magazine P76, named after a failed Leyland car model. He has since visited Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia, has published a number of poetry books and has published his work widely in magazines. For some years he has taught creative writing at the University of Technology, Sydney.
